AmeriCorps

From the first year of MCPN HealthCorps in 1995, the program’s goal has been to positively impact the lives of clinic patients through education, increased outreach services, case management services and resource referrals with other community agencies. The program also seeks to enhance member’s life experience through professional development, training and direct service experience.

HealthCorps members serve within five program areas:

Health and Wellness Educator - Coordinates retinal camera screening program. Provides education to gestational diabetes patients. Provides education and support to overweight patients.

School Based Health – Health educators work in collaboration with Stein Elementary School, Jefferson High School and Alameda High School to provide health education training to the classes on a variety of topics including nutrition, hygiene, fitness, self-esteem, stress management, safety, tobacco, asthma and diabetes.

Homeless Outreach Team – Set appointments for medical and financial needs of homeless patients. Provide resources for families such as housing assistance, job referrals, donations of clothing and food, etc.

Maternal/Child Health Educators – Provide prenatal education, childbirth classes, birth coach services, newborn care education and breastfeeding education.

Aurora Teen Pregnancy Prevention – Works to improve and protect the emotional, physical and sexual health of young people through confidential case management, support groups, parenting classes and community outreach advocacy. Formulate a better understanding of the populations served and the issues surrounding teen pregnancy prevention and intervention efforts.

All applicants must meet standard AmeriCorps eligibility requirements as well as the following:

  • Strong interest in medical outreach and services
  • Conversational Spanish skills highly recommended
  • Strong facilitation skills
  • Ability to work well in a team and individually

Program Year: September-August, 11 months and 1700 hours of service
