Established medical patients are eligible for dental services.
MCPN oral health program provides preventative, restorative and emergency care to patients of all ages with special emphasis toward: children, pregnancy, diabetes, mental handicaps, physical handicaps. Dental services include cleanings, scaling and root planing, sealants, exams, x-rays, fillings, crowns, bridges, root canals, dentures and oral cancer exams.
PREGNANCY
Oral health is often overlooked during pregnancy but it is a very important part of the total picture. If not managed properly, pregnancy may result in pre-term labor and low birth weight.
DID YOU KNOW?
- During pregnancy, hormonal changes can make you more susceptible to oral and dental problems.
- Nearly 75% of all pregnant women have gingivitis.
- Women who have untreated gingivitis during pregnancy are seven times more likely to deliver too early (pre-term) and too small (low-birth weight) of infants.
- Pre-term low birth weight babies have higher incidences of breathing problems, anemia, mental retardation, cerebral palsy, and other serious disorders.
Having your teeth examined and professionally cleaned may lower your risk of complications to both you and your baby during pregnancy.
DIABETES
Patients with diabetes are at an increased risk of developing oral diseases. Management of diabetes and its complications are dependant upon proper oral health.
DID YOU KNOW?
- People with diabetes are more prone to gum disease.
- People with diabetes are more prone to recurrent periodontal abscesses (inamed, infected gums).
- The increased incidence of periodontal (gum) disease results in decreasing ability to control blood sugar levels.
- Oral health complications also associated with diabetes include tooth loss.
- Periodontal disease increases the risk of diabetic complications such as kidney failure, blindness and heart disease.
Dentists identify periodontal disease and can reverse inflammation and bacteria which will help the diabetic to control sugar levels resulting in greater overall health.
CHILDREN
Tooth decay is the most common chronic childhood disease. Oral health problems get worse if left untreated. Delayed or lack of care creates more severe health care needs.
DID YOU KNOW?
- Cavities effect 53% of children 6-8 years old and 84% of 17 year olds.
- Because many children have never seen a dentist, their first dental visit is usually in the emergency room for care of an abscessed infected tooth.
- Chronic pain associated with cavities affects eating drinking, speech, sleeping behavior and attention to learning.
- Only 20% of Medicaid eligible children are seen by a dentist in a given year.
Routine dental visits can prevent your child from chronic pain, increase their attention to learning, improve poor behavior and improve their quality of life signicantly. Routine visits can save parents both time and money.
MENTAL & PHYSICAL DISABILITIES
There are over 600,000 people in Colorado with disabilities not living in institutions. Poor oral hygiene, gingivitis, periodontal disease, and tooth decay are found far more prevalent in people with disabilities than the general population.
DID YOU KNOW?
- Individuals with disabilities have met with a reluctance of community dentists to provide treatment because of lack of knowledge regarding the patient and appropriate physical and /or psychological management, lack of experience, as well as unrealistic financial reimbursement.
- Disabilities may include cerebral palsy, epilepsy , muscular dystrophy, Down syndrome, mental retardation, multiple sclerosis, lupus, autism, developmental disabilities, spinal cord and brain injuries just to name a few.
